About The Position

UTHealth Houston is seeking a skilled and compassionate Emergency Room Physician Assistant (AP) for Night shifts to join their dynamic emergency medicine teams at Lydon B. Johnson Hospital and Memorial Hermann Hospital (TMC). This full-time position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, providing high-quality care to both adult and pediatric patients. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering comprehensive emergency medical care, including performing medical screening assessments, diagnostics, and treatment plans in collaboration with attending physicians. Duties also include ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests such as labs, imaging, and EKGs; performing advanced procedures; and documenting patient encounters accurately in the electronic medical record. The provider will actively participate in trauma and resuscitation efforts, communicate effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members, and ensure continuity of care through appropriate referrals and follow-up planning. Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Professionals (APPs) and Faculty members are considered essential personnel and may be required to report during unexpected disasters or inclement weather events. This may involve working outside of scheduled hours, being part of a ride out team, or contributing to recovery efforts as needed.

Requirements

  • Current Texas Licensure as a Physician Assistant.
  • Current Physician Assistant certification issued by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified.
  • Proficient in the use of medical and surgical instruments and equipment required by work.
  • Physician Assistant State Licensure (PA) by Texas Board of Physician Assistants required
  • Physician Assistant - Certified (PA-C) by National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) by American Heart Association (AHA) required or
  • Clinical specialty certification determined by the department required
  • Master's Degree as Physician Assistant required
  • Bachelor's Degree as Physician Assistant with at least two years of professional experience in the role is acceptable based on terminal degree requirements at the time of graduation required
  • Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts complex, standardized patient care procedures which require experience and specialized training which would otherwise be performed by a physician, but which do not constitute the practice of medicine.
  • Conducts independent and physician supervised rounding on unit.
  • Performs relevant patient evaluations and assessments and provides appropriate treatment; including monitoring and ordering medications.
  • Coordinates, directs, and implements the patient's plan of care.
  • Assists in collecting patient histories, screens for co-morbidities, and provides guidance and preventative health care as needed.
  • Performs physical examinations and provides episodic care or problem oriented care under the supervision of a physician.
  • Orders appropriate laboratory, diagnostic and radiographic tests and interprets the results.
  • Monitors the treatment program of the patient to inform the attending physician of pertinent medical information.
  • Facilitates patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition and health promotion or preventive health.
  • Assists physicians in formulating therapeutic decisions.
  • Maintains appropriate records, and prepares chart documentation for review and counter signature by the physician.
  • Prepares and cares for supplies and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Performs within the scope of practice prescribed by licensure and certification.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
