About The Position

The Physical Therapist (PT) confirms and interprets physician referrals, assesses patients, and plans and implements individualized treatment programs in accordance with Physical Therapy regulations, physician referrals, patient age and developmental needs, and medical diagnoses. The PT works with patients and/or family members to establish treatment goals and provides age-appropriate care. The role coordinates care and clinical activities with patients, families, therapists, Clinical Team Leaders, managers, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team. The PT documents care in medical records and completes required forms in compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies. The position supervises Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs), collaborates with therapy and support staff, and may orient employees or guide volunteers, students, support staff, or contract staff. The PT may participate in in-services, performance improvement, program development and evaluation, employee orientation, committee work, peer review, and staff meetings. The role requires access to patient information and may involve communication, consultation, or problem-solving with colleagues and outside parties. The PT may suggest cost-containment initiatives but does not have authority to commit the organization to vendors. For Home Care, work is performed in patients’ homes. Practitioners provide their own transportation and travel daily between patient homes. Work may also be performed at other Carilion facilities to meet staffing needs, and at times outside a clinic setting for activities such as driving programs, hydrotherapy, or home evaluations. The work involves physical activity with patients, including lifting, manipulating, pushing, pulling, bending, and walking; patients may weigh over 200 pounds. The role includes occasional exposure to serious injury and frequent environmental hazards, including blood and bodily fluids, requiring standard precautions.
