About The Position

SECEP is seeking a Physical Education Assistant to support the delivery of physical education instruction and adaptive physical education programming for students with significant behavioral, emotional, developmental, and/or physical needs. The Physical Education Assistant will work under the direction of the Physical Education Teacher and building administration to assist with instructional activities, student supervision, behavior support, equipment management, and the implementation of individualized physical education programs. The Physical Education Assistant will help create and maintain a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment that promotes student participation, physical development, social interaction, and overall wellness.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to implement teacher-directed instructional plans and behavior support strategies.
  • Ability to participate in physical activities and assist students with mobility, positioning, and movement activities as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree in education, kinesiology, recreation, physical education, or related field preferred.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities, behavioral challenges, or in a school setting preferred.
  • Experience supporting adaptive physical education activities preferred.
  • CPR, First Aid, and Handle With Care training preferred or willingness to obtain training as required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Physical Education Teacher in providing direct physical education instruction to individual students and student groups.
  • Support the implementation of adaptive physical education activities designed to meet the unique physical, developmental, and behavioral needs of students.
  • Assist students in participating in gross motor, movement, fitness, recreational, and motor skill development activities.
  • Support the implementation of lesson plans, instructional activities, and classroom routines developed by the Physical Education Teacher.
  • Assist with the preparation, organization, setup, and maintenance of instructional materials, equipment, and activity areas.
  • Monitor student participation and engagement during physical education activities and provide appropriate support and encouragement.
  • Assist with implementing behavior management strategies and positive behavior supports consistent with SECEP policies and procedures.
  • Support student safety during physical education classes, transitions, field trips, community-based instruction, and school-related activities.
  • Assist with monitoring students during arrival, dismissal, bus loading and unloading, and other assigned supervisory duties.
  • Participate in crisis intervention procedures and provide assistance during emergency situations in accordance with established SECEP procedures and training.
  • Observe and report student progress, participation, behavior, and safety concerns to the Physical Education Teacher and administration.
  • Assist with maintaining inventory, storage, inspection, and organization of physical education equipment and supplies.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community members through effective verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records, personnel matters, and school operations in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, flexibility, and collaboration in supporting the educational mission of SECEP.
  • Performs all other duties as directed.
