About The Position

The Phlebotomy Supervisor will be responsible for a variety of tasks including computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. This role requires adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and proficiency in phlebotomy techniques for patients of all ages. The supervisor will process various types of specimens, manage inventory and supplies, and maintain the cleanliness of laboratory areas and equipment. Additionally, the role involves processing specimens for automated instrumentation and referral to reference laboratories. Key responsibilities include performing annual staff performance evaluations, providing staff training and orientation, evaluating and ensuring staff competency, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and laboratory policies. The supervisor will also contribute to a safe work environment by evaluating and implementing safety measures, and actively participate in Quality Assurance data collection and Performance Improvement initiatives. Other duties may include assisting with sample pick-up, sorting, and storage, as well as general administrative tasks. The supervisor may also perform CLIA waived testing after appropriate training and competency assessment.

Requirements

  • BLS certification upon hire and maintained current, required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience, required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous supervisory/management experience, required.

Nice To Haves

  • Current and valid state Certification as a CPT I or CPT II or ASCP certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
  • Possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
  • Processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
  • Processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
  • Stocks and orders routine supplies.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
  • Processes or loads specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • Performs annual staff performance evaluations.
  • Provides staff training and orientation.
  • Evaluates and ensures staff competency.
  • Ensures staff compliance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures appropriate to the department.
  • Ensures staff compliance with all laboratory and hospital policies.
  • Provides for a safe work environment in evaluating and implementing PPE and other safety phlebotomy devices.
  • Actively participates in the collection and evaluation of QA data for the development of Performance Improvement initiatives.
  • May assist to Pick up samples at hospital/ OR, assist lab specialty in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, assist pathology, inventory, replenish supplies, order supplies, mail pick up/ delivery, faxing, answering phone, product deliveries, etc.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
  • May perform CLIA waived testing after completing training and competency.
