The Phlebotomist adheres to strict patient identification protocols, provides clinical support during exams and procedures, and may perform EKGs and assist with diagnostic testing. Services are provided across multiple care settings, including Patient Service Centers, clinics, nursing homes, and home draw environments. The position requires excellent judgment, problem-solving ability, customer service skills, and the flexibility to work independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and less than 1 year of phlebotomy experience required or Graduation from a phlebotomy training program required or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Must be flexible and able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology/anatomy preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collects, registers, and processes patient laboratory specimens using a variety of collection techniques, protocols, and computer systems.
  • Adheres to strict patient identification protocols across all age groups and levels of complexity.
  • Provides clinical support to providers during patient exams and procedures.
  • May perform EKGs and assist with diagnostic testing.
  • Services patients across multiple care settings, including Patient Service Centers, clinics, nursing homes, and home draw environments.
  • Demonstrates excellent judgment, problem-solving ability, and customer service skills.
  • Greets and pleasantly interacts with patients.
  • Verifies patient demographic/insurance information and reviews physician orders.
  • Reconciles issues with patient or physician’s office, documents, and updates computer systems.
  • Uses multiple computer systems to complete patient and billing registrations, including conversion of diagnostic verbiage to billing codes, accurate interpretation and entry of tests, as well as generation of accurate labels.
  • Escorts patients from the waiting area to exam areas.
  • Obtains vital signs.
  • Enters patient data, condition and care given into electronic medical record system.
  • Performs administrative duties as assigned, which may include scheduling and registration.
  • Attaches patient to diagnostic and medical equipment, including but not limited to, dynamapp, pulse oximeter, EKG, cardiac monitor and pneumatic tourniquet.
  • Follows patient identification and order verification protocols before collection of the specimen.
  • Performs safe venipuncture, heel or finger sticks and collection of other specimens, such as throat cultures, urine, and stool, following all age-specific and procedural protocols, as well as infection control and safety protocols.
  • Labels all specimens according to protocols.
  • Performs processing of specimens, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and preparation for transport, including computer logging, packaging, and appropriate prioritization actions for specimen integrity.
  • Maintains supplies.
  • Places orders following PAR level guidelines.
  • Receives and rotates stock according to expiration date.
  • Reconciles orders with delivery, and tracks utilization for cost trending purposes.
  • Maintains cleanliness and neatness of site.
  • Monitors and maintains equipment, including daily temperature documentation, disinfection, sharps management, and performance of maintenance and inspections.
  • Troubleshoots issues.
  • Implements standard infection prevention measures, such as proper hand hygiene and contact/isolation precautions, according to established protocols.
  • Monitors infection prevention practices for breaches and suggests/initiates corrections.
  • With RN oversight, precepts new employees to the area, providing detailed overview of requirements and ensuring competence in all area of practices.
  • Prescription renewal chart documentation entry.
  • Sends RX to providers for authorization.
  • Performs prior authorizations.
  • Enters specific HMP from mail and faxes in chart.
  • Performs back-up clerical duties as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
