About The Position

The Phlebotomist works in Saint Mary’s Hospital’s Outpatient Physician Blood Draw Department in Waterbury, Connecticut. The role obtains blood specimens, processes laboratory specimens for clinical analysis, provides patient information to the appropriate caregiver, and ensures accurate and complete patient registration. The position requires flexibility to cover Physician Blood Draw locations as needed and the ability to work independently.

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week day-shift position. Hours may range from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. and include every other Saturday; holidays are not required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a phlebotomy program.
• At least one year of phlebotomy experience in a blood draw station, ambulatory care, or acute care setting.
• Knowledge of information systems.
• Strong communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, and outside providers.
• Ability to take initiative and work independently.

Nice To Haves

• National Phlebotomy Certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Identify patients according to policy and perform venipuncture using standard or butterfly methods.
• Label specimens according to laboratory policy.
• Receive, cancel, and order laboratory and microbiology specimens, and process specimens.
• Register patients accurately and completely.
• Provide patient information to the appropriate caregiver.
• Cover other Physician Blood Draw locations as needed.
