About The Position

Frederick Health is seeking a part-time phlebotomist registrar to support the organization's mission, vision, and core values. This role is responsible for obtaining accurate demographic and insurance information from patients prior to services to minimize financial risks. The phlebotomist will collect specimens, ensure specimen integrity, perform patient registration, enter test orders, and resolve any ambiguities. They will also verify insurance eligibility and authorizations, collect patient cost-sharing amounts (copays, deductibles, etc.), and refer patients to financial counselors when necessary. Effective communication, customer service, and adherence to standard operating procedures are crucial. If responsible for bleeding times, the position must meet CLIA qualifications. The role requires understanding of medical terminology, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, the ability to multitask under pressure, and adaptability to a changing work environment.

Requirements

  • Possess the ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s/department’s policies and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, customers, employees, and Senior Leaders.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to analyze and determine the type of data needed to complete various types of patient registration functions.
  • Must demonstrate ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously and work under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend, apply, and follow all policies and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Current BLS (CPR) in compliance with site policy for new hires.
  • One year of customer service experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of medical terminology desirable.
  • Thirteen-week phlebotomy course or 3-month military course is preferred.
  • Certification from approved phlebotomy program preferred.
  • Current valid driver's license may be required.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • One year of experience in the areas of patient registration and /or patient accounts or in a physician’s office practice or other health care facility preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain accurate, pertinent demographic and insurance information prior to services.
  • Collect proper specimens from the patient, i.e., blood, urine, or culture according to the physician’s order, ensuring specimen integrity.
  • Follow standard operating procedures for positive patient ID, collection, labeling, processing, and handling of appropriate specimens ensuring patient safety while maintaining customer focus.
  • Enter patient demographics for registration and order entry of tests.
  • Resolve ambiguous or unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate medical/laboratory personnel.
  • Ensure appropriate insurance eligibility and authorizations are present prior to or at the time of services.
  • Responsible for the POS collection of patients owed cost sharing amounts (copays, deductibles, coinsurance, and full cost (non-covered, self-pay) prior to or at the time of service.
  • Refer patients to Financial Counselors for Financial Assistance or provide an application, when applicable.
  • Ensure that cash drawer is cashed out appropriately daily.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with all customers.
  • Use good judgement as to what to communicate to whom as well as the best way to get that accomplished.
  • Speak in a clear and credible manner, selecting the right tone for the situation and audience.
  • Listen to others and allow them to make their point, always demonstrates excellent customer service.
  • Meet qualifications defined by CLIA under 42CFR493.1423 and the responsibilities under 42CFR493.1425 for moderate complexity testing personnel, if responsible for bleeding times.
