This position assists a licensed pharmacist with technical duties related to medication preparation and distribution. The Pharmacy Technician I is responsible for accurately selecting, preparing, and labeling medications, including hazardous drugs and controlled substances. They also assist with medication distribution, screen phone calls, and manage daily pharmacy procurement, inventory control, and outdate checking. Depending on the facility, responsibilities may include completing documentation for controlled substances, performing nonsterile compounding, sterile IV admixture, and inspecting medication storage areas. The role may also involve completing and documenting medication admission histories, seeking additional duties when work is complete, and participating in quality improvement initiatives. Additionally, they may assist in training other technicians and support area leaders. Key tasks include obtaining and recording patient demographic information, data entry into the pharmacy system, insurance verification, label generation, and cashiering. The role requires competence in third-party billing functions and the ability to provide age-appropriate patient care. In some cases, the technician may obtain immunization certification and administer immunizations under pharmacist supervision, or operate a vehicle to deliver medications and supplies.
