About The Position

Supervises the day-to-day pharmacy technician operations including scheduling, task assignments, training, staff development and competency development and assessment. Ensures employee assignments/duties are completed such that established Board of Pharmacy and Joint Commission medication management standards are adhered to. Works as a pharmacy technician approximately 20% of scheduled time in order to maintain competency and maintain proper staffing levels. Pharmacy technician supervisors will complete employee performance reviews, orient and onboard new employees, interview and hire pharmacy technicians, and render corrective action as needed.

Requirements

  • Must have ONE of the following combinations of education and experience: Bachelor’s degree AND One (1) year of management or pharmacy experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience.
  • Associates degree AND Three (3) year’s pharmacy experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND Five (5) year’s pharmacy experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience.
  • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: MD: Pharmacy Technician Student Permit or Pharmacy Technician License through Maryland Board of Pharmacy OH: Pharmacy Technician Trainee License or Certified or Registered Pharmacy Technician License through Ohio Board of Pharmacy PA: Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy WV: Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Pharmacy Technician License through West Virginia Board of Pharmacy
  • Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or obtain within 15 months of hire.
  • Associates degree AND Three year’s pharmacy experience. Experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience required;
  • High school diploma or equivalent AND Five year’s pharmacy experience. Experience in training, leadership, or other related specialized experience required.
  • Must be nationally certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board within 9 months of hire.
  • Must be registered with the WV Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician trainee upon hire.
  • Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills and poise
  • Excellent verbal, written and decision making skills

Responsibilities

  • Assigns, coordinates and monitors the workflow of Pharmacy Technicians to provide efficient drug distribution.
  • Routinely evaluates technician responsibilities and distributes in efficient and equitable manner.
  • Coordinates technician projects and assignments with pharmacy managers to achieve hospital and department goals.
  • Oversees the education and training of pharmacy technicians.
  • Conducts and documents technician departmental orientation and training. Coordinates technician orientation in all pharmacy service areas.
  • Coordinates continuing education programs for pharmacy technicians in the department.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with external, accredited technician training programs.
  • Conducts technician performance reviews according to hospital format.
  • Completes or oversees department work schedule. Adjusts technician staffing as needed based on planned and unplanned employee absences.
  • Performs the essential duties and responsibilities of a pharmacy technician when scheduled to staff and/or when working an open shift.
  • Follows up to insure that requested projects are completed properly.
  • Interviews and hires applicants for technician positions in the department and coordinates peer-interview process.
  • Annually evaluates technician competency assessments and make improvements when necessary.
  • Ensures that all technicians maintain current state and national registration/certifications.
  • Completes personnel management duties for assigned staff.
  • Conducts routine technician meetings.
  • Participates in division meetings with manager.
  • Consistently ensures that technicians follow department and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Initiates corrective action, with Pharmacy Management guidance, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Independently prepares, processes and reprocesses patient prescriptions and billing.
  • Follows up with third parties on rejected paid claims prior authorizations.
  • Works and coordinates with care managers and patients on patient’s financial challenges.
  • Ensures follow up with care management regarding patient access to lower cost drugs.
  • Leads and/or assists in the coordination of various clinical initiatives.
  • Assists in the trouble shooting and problem solving of pharmacy software.
  • Conjointly with Manager, establishes schedule for technical/clerical personnel to assure adequate staffing or Pharmacy.
  • Coordinates adjustments in staffing due to unexpected/unforeseen changes in staffing.
  • Monitors productivity and recommends changes to increase efficiency and effectiveness of drug distribution systems.
