Pharmacist - Oncology Rural
About The Position
The Pharmacist provides clinical oncology pharmacy support for Avera Cancer Institute sites in South Dakota. Clinic support is provided remotely from Sioux Falls, with occasional travel to the Yankton, Pierre, Mitchell, and Aberdeen sites. The position also supports staff education, implementation of updated treatment protocols, and development of supportive-care pathways. It is federally funded through the Rural Health Transformation Program. The role is responsible for the safe, effective, and economical use of medications for patients of all ages. Duties include preparing and dispensing prescriptions, advising healthcare professionals on drug therapies, monitoring patient medication regimens, and educating patients about medication use. The Pharmacist collaborates with medical staff on patient treatment, supports compliance with health-system policies and regulatory requirements, and oversees pharmacy technical staff and interns. Additional responsibilities may include committee involvement, teaching, clinical research, and continuing education.
Requirements
- Active Pharmacist license in the state of practice within 30 days.
- Ability to work the hours specified.

Responsibilities
- Prepare and dispense medications and evaluate pharmacy-service functions.
- Collect data; report adverse drug reactions; conduct drug utilization evaluations and quality assurance audits; and manage inventory.
- Interpret, process, and monitor provider medication orders for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness.
- Monitor medication therapy by reviewing medication regimens, medical problems, laboratory data, and special procedures, and coordinating with other clinicians involved in patient care.
- Provide timely medication information to providers and other healthcare professionals.
- Counsel patients on proper medication use, desired effects, and potential adverse effects.
- Mentor students, interns, technicians, and others in career planning and professional development.
- Coordinate and oversee workflow with pharmacists, residents, pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy students.
- Maintain knowledge of professional standards, regulatory and licensing policies, pharmacy laws, and organizational policies and procedures.
- Communicate issues and occurrences through established lines of authority and help identify ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.
