About The Position

The City of Fountain Valley is seeking a motivated, customer-focused professional to join its Community Development Department as a Permit Technician / Building Inspector. This hybrid role combines aspects of permit processing and building inspection, offering a unique opportunity to work directly with homeowners, contractors, architects, engineers, and the public. Responsibilities include assisting customers with the permitting process, reviewing applications and plans, issuing routine permits, scheduling inspections, and performing basic inspections to ensure construction compliance with approved plans and building codes. The position allows for growth and expertise development across the entire building permit process, from application to inspection, with a focus on California Building Standards Codes, local regulations, construction practices, and municipal operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Supplemented by college-level coursework in a related field (planning, drafting, engineering, mathematics, construction, building inspection, or related).
  • At least two years of relevant experience in customer service, administrative support, or building/construction trades (preferably involving permits, construction, planning, engineering, or building departments).
  • California Driver License.
  • Possess an ICC Residential Building Inspector Certification (B1) or be able to obtain it within 12 months.

Nice To Haves

  • International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician Certification is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Help customers navigate the permitting process.
  • Review applications and plans.
  • Issue routine permits.
  • Schedule inspections.
  • Perform basic inspections to verify that construction complies with approved plans and applicable building codes.
  • Inspect foundations, framing, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, roofing, solar installations, or other residential construction.
  • Document findings.
  • Communicate correction requirements.
  • Help property owners and contractors understand what is needed to move their projects forward.
