About The Position

This position is part of a four-level Inspection series. The role involves inspecting structural systems such as plumbing, electrical, gas, or building construction in residential and commercial buildings. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with codes and standards, approving or rejecting construction, and maintaining records. The department will hire for either a Building Inspector or a Senior Building Inspector depending on the applicant's experience and education. The first part of each section of the description applies to the Building Inspector position, and the second part applies to the Senior Building Inspector position. A resume is preferred in addition to a completed application. This position will remain open through October 13, 2026, or until filled.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in construction or a closely related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Inspector Certification. (Must obtain two full certifications within one year of hire.)
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Associate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Two (2) years of construction or trades experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Plumbing, Mechanical, Electrical, and Building Inspector Certification.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of construction principles and methods.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection methods.
  • Knowledge of customer service principles.
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping principles.
  • Knowledge of computers and related software applications.
  • Skill in inspecting construction projects.
  • Skill in providing customer service.
  • Skill in reading construction drawings, plans, and/or specifications.
  • Skill in applying applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Skill in maintaining logs and records.
  • Skill in using a computer and related software applications.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects the construction and installation of building, electrical, mechanical and/or plumbing systems for compliance with codes, specifications and plans to determine if work and workmanship is in compliance.
  • Reviews building, electrical, mechanical, and/or plumbing systems plans and specifications to ensure conformance with code.
  • May approve or reject work plans.
  • Interprets building requirements and restrictions to architects, contractors, builders and the public.
  • Prepares and maintains construction and building inspection results, files, and logs; prepares related reports.
  • May provide technical assistance and direction to other building inspection staff in the area of assigned specialization.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
