About The Position

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the Union. The role involves responding to field emergencies by coordinating and dispatching field service personnel, scheduling appointments, field investigations, and inspections while maintaining clear communication. It handles requests related to water and wastewater services, inspections, utility locates, and emergency utility repairs. The position also processes, reviews, and schedules 811 locates within the designated time frame, reviews engineered plans to support the issuance of utility permits, and issues and processes payments for water, sewer, and mobile hydrant use permits. Additionally, it inspects mobile meters on trucks used for hydrant access, creates service orders, and assists with new account setup while ensuring accurate records and logs. The role supports the Cross-Connection Control Program (backflow prevention) and performs additional tasks as assigned to ensure efficient departmental operations. Strong customer service skills are essential for effective communication with customers, contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders, ensuring responsive, professional, and solution-oriented service. Employees may be required to participate in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which may include 12-hour work shifts for extended periods, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience in one or more of the following fields: drafting, surveying, inspection, materials testing, plan review, permitting, computerized mapping, computer assisted design (CAD), traffic signal control, code enforcement, and/or a related field
  • At least one (1) year of which must have been at the Engineering Technician I level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • OR Associate’s degree in Engineering, Drafting, Computer Assisted Design (CAD), or a discipline specific to the department
  • At least one (1) year of which must have been at the Engineering Technician I level with the Municipality or the equivalent elsewhere.
  • Satisfactory background check which includes criminal, education, and employment history at time of hire.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work and accept employment in the United States.

  • Participate in major emergencies or disasters as outlined in AWWU’s disaster plan matrix, which defines each employee’s potential duties and responsibilities. This may include 12-hour work shifts, which may continue for 72 hours or more starting at any time an event might occur, 7 days a week, 24 hours per day.
