About The Position

The Syracuse City School District is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with them in moving the district toward its goals. The district represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 19,000+ students Pre-K-12. The district offers 120 different athletic teams for students in grades 7-12, with a coaching staff that consists of certified, dedicated people who enjoy working with our student athletes. The modified program for grades 7-8 emphasizes discipline, enjoyment of play, competition, and dedication to the value that hard work will produce rewards. The high school level stresses the development of academics, goal setting, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. This position is an extracurricular contract for the Percussion-Battery Instructor role.

Requirements

  • Assisting students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals
  • Working with Director during auditions
  • Providing input into student placement on drumline instruments
  • Assisting in teaching drill for the show
  • Checking positioning of percussion in each musical selection
  • Choreographing sticking and drum line movement to match drill (visuals)
  • Assisting Director in maintaining inventories of percussion supplies, materials, and equipment
  • Adjusting and maintaining percussion instruments
  • Monitoring and controlling student behavior
  • Sharing concerns with the Director

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the instructional delivery of the battery section of the band.
  • Instruct students on their instrument, at their level, and ensures each student’s progress by providing as much individualization as possible (including drum line warm-ups, marching techniques and stick work).
  • Teach cadences for marching/playing at parades and other community events.
  • Engage students to practice, play and perform introduced materials.
  • Assist in preparing the drumline for appropriate public performances in keeping with the expectations of the Director.
  • Attend all rehearsals, sectionals and performances actively participating in assisting students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals.
  • Work with the Director during auditions and provide input into placement of students on instruments of the drumline.
  • Assist in teaching drill for the show and checking the positioning of the percussion in each musical selection.
  • Choreograph sticking and drum line movement to match the drill (visuals).
  • Assist Director in maintaining inventories of percussion supplies, materials, and equipment; adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for student use.
  • Monitor and control student behavior according to established procedures and share any concerns, etc. with the Director.
