Perception Engineer Intern (Summer 2027)

Andrenam•Torrance, CA
•$30 - $40•Onsite

About The Position

Andrenam is seeking a Perception Engineer Intern for Summer 2027 to help develop and test algorithms that turn sonar and other sensor data into information that operators or autonomous systems can use. The internship is hands-on and includes ownership of a scoped project supporting the core perception pipeline, collaboration with the engineers building the systems, regular feedback and mentorship, and work with real-world data collected in harsh marine environments. Interns will evaluate algorithm performance, support software integration, troubleshoot issues, and document their work and decisions. The role is full-time and onsite at Andrenam’s Torrance, California office. Andrenam builds sonar and sensing systems for maritime applications and describes itself as a mission-driven company working at the intersection of maritime autonomy and defense.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field.
  • Programming experience in Python or C++.
  • Coursework or project experience in computer vision, signal processing, or machine learning, including at least one project the candidate can explain in detail.
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and willingness to investigate unfamiliar problems.
  • Clear communication skills and a track record of working well with others.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations without sponsorship for an export license, because the position may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with real sensor data, such as sonar, camera, radar, or lidar.
  • Experience implementing a signal-processing or machine-learning algorithm for a real-time application.
  • Experience implementing solutions on an embedded device, such as a microcontroller or embedded Linux, or in the cloud using AWS, GCP, Azure, or similar.
  • Experience on a student engineering team, such as underwater robotics, autonomous vehicles, or similar design-build competitions.
  • Interest in maritime systems, autonomy, or defense technology.

Responsibilities

  • Help develop, test, and improve perception algorithms using sonar and other sensor data, with guidance from the team.
  • Own a scoped project that supports the core perception pipeline.
  • Work with real data collected from systems in the field.
  • Evaluate algorithm performance against real-world data and help identify shortcomings.
  • Support integration of perception software with the rest of the systems.
  • Troubleshoot issues and work with the team to understand root causes and fixes.
  • Work closely with engineers, incorporate feedback, and iterate quickly.
  • Share progress clearly and ask questions early.
  • Document work, results, and decisions so the team can build on them after the internship.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of $30–$40 per hour.
  • Lunch and snacks provided in the office.
  • Access to a work environment blending technology, maritime, and defense.
