About The Position

The Penetrant Inspector is responsible for identifying and evaluating defects in castings using fluorescent penetrant inspection methods. This role ensures that castings meet customer specifications and company standards, routes rejectable castings, and identifies indications for rework. The position involves hands-on inspection, defect analysis, and adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Advanced inspection skills as demonstrated by the competent performance of Penetrant Line Operator and Level 1 Penetrant Inspection Certification, OR an equivalent combination of classroom training and work experience.
  • High School Graduation or GED (necessary for NDT certification).
  • Ability to read and follow specifications found in Tech Cards, Quality Control Manuals, and other technical materials.
  • 20/30 correctable vision, and satisfactory passage of depth perception and color vision tests.
  • Ability to lift and/or maneuver objects weighing twenty to forty pounds and occasionally up to eighty pounds.
  • Ability to work in difficult working conditions which may include exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, temperature extremes and other elements for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and evaluate defects in castings using fluorescent penetrant inspection methods.
  • Determine if castings meet customer specifications and company standards.
  • Route rejectable castings and identify indications for rework.
  • Place castings on inspection tables or carts, manually or with hoists.
  • Visually inspect penetrant-treated castings under ultraviolet light for surface discontinuities.
  • Inspect castings for cracks, oxides, cold shots, cold shuts, shrinkage, dirt, and other indications.
  • Use mirrors and other hand tools for inspection, potentially including boroscopes or other ultraviolet light sources.
  • Perform grinding for minor repairs as needed.
  • Apply fluorescent penetrant liquid to castings for spot checks.
  • Complete air pressure tests for penetrant leaks on specified parts.
  • Potentially train Line Operators.
  • Mark indications on parts during inspection.
  • Analyze inspection results and evaluate castings for acceptance or salvage repair.
  • Complete salvage routing cards, indicating necessary repairs.
  • Adhere to plant and department safety rules.
  • Safely operate all equipment and tools.
  • Identify and report safety problems.
  • Potentially work with hazardous waste.
  • Complete logs, reports, and records.
  • Perform other tasks as directed, including line operations.
