About The Position

The Pediatric Oncology Nurse II on the Kay 3 unit at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is responsible for the primary care coordination of interdisciplinary patient care activities and managing patients throughout their continuum of care. This role involves high-quality patient care through the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, delegation, coordination, and evaluation of patient progress. The nurse acts as a patient/family advocate, communicating and coordinating care with the Health Care Team. The Kay 3 unit specializes in short-stay patients admitted for chemotherapy and other infusions, with a capacity of up to 15 beds, including some ICU step-down beds. The unit maintains small nurse-to-patient ratios to focus on protocol navigation, chemotherapy administration, and intermediate-level care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), required.
  • BSN required with completion of 18 months of clinical nursing experience.
  • St. Jude or other RN experience required.
  • Intermediate pediatric assessment, critical thinking, and pain assessment skills.
  • Some experience in pediatric or oncology nursing.
  • Working knowledge of research protocols.
  • Strong knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on the assigned unit.
  • Strong knowledge of the principles of growth and development for all ages served.
  • Strong ability to assess and interpret age specific data about the patient’s status.
  • Strong clinical nursing, interpersonal, and patient education skills.
  • Proven performance in earlier role.
  • Must possess a current Tennessee State Board of Nursing license if primary residence is Tennessee or a Nurse Licensure non-Compact state.
  • Must possess a current State Board of Nursing license in the state of primary residence if the state is a Nurse Licensure Compact state.

Nice To Haves

  • Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS), OR Advanced Cardiac Life Support ACLS, preferred as applicable.
  • Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON) preferred.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred.
