About The Position

The PDS&T Toxins group within AbbVie’s Operations Science & Technology - Biologics organization supports manufacturing, process validation, regulatory submissions, and continuous improvement for late-stage and commercial manufacturing of biological toxins products. This Bioassay Scientist Co-Op is based in Irvine, California, and focuses on using scientific and bioengineering principles to develop bioassay methods with next-generation cell lines. The co-op is a work experience and is not intended to support a thesis. The program runs for six months, from June through December. The successful candidate will develop and execute experiments in bioassay and cell engineering, interpret results, and adapt experimental plans to project needs. The role requires practical knowledge of techniques such as cell culture, bioassay, cell-cycle control, PCR, Western blotting, and fluorescence microscopy, with additional experience in areas such as genetic editing, cell-line development, and cell sorting valued. The scientist will work independently while collaborating with multidisciplinary and cross-functional colleagues, and will communicate scientific plans and results through meetings, reports, presentations, publications, and patents.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a university Master’s degree program in Cell and Molecular Biology, Pharmaceutical Science, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Pharmacology, or a related field, and remain enrolled at the time of the co-op.
  • Able to commit to a six-month program in Irvine, California, from June through December.
  • Expected graduation between May 2028 and December 2028.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with scientists and cross-functional team members.
