PCT - Patient Care Tech - Med Surg
About The Position
The Patient Care Tech provides basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision in the 5 South Tower Ortho department at UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham. Available schedules include full-time day shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, full-time night shifts from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, and part-time day shifts from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. All listed shifts work every third weekend. The role supports patients with mobility, personal care, and activities of daily living; observes and reports changes in patient condition; documents required records; and helps maintain clean, orderly patient rooms and medical equipment. Under direction of the staff nurse, the technician also performs specified technical patient-care duties, obtains and records vital signs and other measurements, and completes other assigned duties.
Requirements
- BLS Provider certification must be obtained within 1 month (30 days) of hire or job transfer; American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification is accepted.
- High school diploma equivalency or 1 year of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.
- Assist patients with ambulation, including transfers to a recliner, walks to the bathroom or down the hall, and safe transportation to their vehicles after dismissal.
- Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living.
- Report findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff and document necessary records.
- Keep patient rooms clean and orderly and maintain medical equipment.
- Perform technical patient-care duties as directed by the staff nurse, including oxygen setup, Foley catheter care, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection, and EKGs.
- Obtain and record vital signs, weight, and intake and output.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
