PCS Hardware Engineer

Catalyx•Frederick, MD

About The Position

Catalyx is seeking a PCS Hardware Engineer to lead the design, coordination, and documentation of physical hardware arrangements for a project’s Emerson DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS). The role ensures PCS hardware is integrated with process equipment, instrumentation and controls, electrical systems, networking, and facility layouts, while supporting site standards, maintainability, future expansion, and successful project execution. The engineer coordinates with site automation personnel and multidisciplinary engineering teams, and works with the Design-Build Firm, system integrators, and equipment vendors as the technical design lead for PCS hardware. The role also supports integration of long-lead process equipment, vendor-supplied packages, remote I/O cabinets, hardware interfaces, and vendor scopes of work.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing PCS/DCS hardware systems; Emerson DeltaV experience is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with control system cabinets, panels, remote I/O, servers, workstations, networking hardware, and associated infrastructure.
  • Experience integrating control system hardware with vendor-supplied process equipment and packaged skids.
  • Strong understanding of instrumentation and controls, electrical interfaces, industrial networking, equipment layouts, and system integration.
  • Experience developing hardware design documentation, equipment specifications, interface definitions, and vendor scopes of work.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, site personnel, vendors, design-build contractors, and system integrators.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, coordination, and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience supporting large-scale industrial, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or process engineering projects.
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical design and layout of PCS hardware, including cabinets, panels, racks, servers, workstations, network equipment, and power supplies.
  • Coordinate with site automation personnel to align designs with site standards, operational needs, and the long-term automation roadmap.
  • Review control rooms, equipment layouts, and technical spaces for access, cable routing, environmental conditions, power, cooling, and maintenance clearances.
  • Collaborate with process, instrumentation and controls, electrical, networking, and equipment engineering teams to ensure system integration.
  • Support long-lead process equipment integration, including vendor-supplied packages, remote I/O cabinets, hardware interfaces, and definition of vendor scopes of work.
  • Identify and resolve hardware layout, interface, and integration issues before procurement, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
  • Develop and maintain PCS hardware design documentation and support related project deliverables.
  • Coordinate design requirements with the Design-Build Firm, system integrators, and equipment vendors, serving as the technical design lead for PCS hardware.
