About the position
The job overview for this position is that Symmetry Software, a subsidiary of Gusto, is seeking a detail-oriented individual to work as a Tax Research Analyst. The role involves conducting research to ensure that the payroll tax software products are up-to-date and compliant with regulations. The analyst will be responsible for monitoring tax rates and forms, documenting changes, and maintaining a tax rate database. The position requires collaboration with various teams and providing research and insight to support Symmetry's brand promise of accurate tax calculations.
Responsibilities
- Provides subject matter expertise and guidance across all areas of payroll tax
- Performs research in federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations
- Contacts government agencies and tax jurisdictions to obtain clarification on unclear or changed laws or regulations
- Familiar with minimum wages
- Knowledge of Canadian payroll, payroll taxes, and TD1 Personal Tax Credit returns
- Understanding of employee W-4 forms and how they work
- Participates in projects to ensure payroll tax requirements are met
- Assists software engineers, account associates, and support team in understanding payroll tax laws for product development and client communications
- Assists client success and support teams with tax rate questions and provides supporting documentation when necessary
- Joins industry groups to develop a network of contacts for sharing tax information
- Maintains excellent records in information systems
- Reports directly to the Manager of Tax Research
- Works in a collaborative team environment
- Develops process documentation and workflows
- Keeps up to date with payroll tax activities and compliance with regulations
- Interprets, communicates, and executes changes as needed
- Coordinates efforts between Tax Research and other departments to ensure accuracy of tax withholding data
- Maintains files and provides necessary reports or documentation
- Provides recommendations for continuous process improvement
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency with automated systems
- At least three or more years of working experience in payroll tax and/or processing payroll
- Two or more years of experience in a software development company (desired)
- Friendly and upbeat personality
- Knowledge of payroll tax for the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Canada
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Outstanding interpersonal skills
Requirements
- Prior experience in payroll tax activities, including compliance with local, state, and federal regulations
- Ability to interpret, communicate, and execute changes as needed in payroll/tax legislation
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency with automated systems
- At least three or more years of working experience in payroll tax and/or processing payroll in an in-house environment
- Two or more years of experience in a software development company (highly desired, but not required)
- Knowledge of payroll tax for the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Canada
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving abilities
- Outstanding interpersonal skills
- Detail-oriented and able to maintain excellent records
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
- Familiarity with minimum wages
- Understanding of employee W-4 forms and how they work
- Ability to develop process documentation and workflows
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain files and provide necessary reports/documentation
