About The Position

The Payroll Manager is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing for employees, and related reporting and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This role involves reconciling payroll data, managing payroll-related reporting and tax compliance, and assisting with audits and month-end close activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 5-8 years of payroll accounting experience; multi-state payroll experience required.
  • Strong understanding of payroll and tax laws.
  • Proficiency with payroll systems (e.g., ADP, Paylocity, Workday, UKG), Excel, and NetSuite.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to solve practical problems via a logical, analytic approach.
  • Knowledge of electronic equipment, intermediate PC skills, knowledge of internet software and proficiency.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive and Google Docs is a must.
  • Computer experience/operation is required.
  • Must have the ability to operate general office equipment.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work under dynamic schedule constraints and consistently meet deliverable timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage end-to-end payroll processing for multi-state employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the payroll team, providing guidance, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain and continuously improve payroll records, ensuring appropriate documentation is filed and retained in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review, approve, and reconcile payroll journal entries and general ledger accounts, supporting the integrity of financial reporting.
  • Manage and reconcile multi-state payroll tax filings, ensuring timely and accurate submissions with zero penalties.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal, external, and governmental audits (e.g., IRS, DOL), coordinating responses and ensuring audit readiness.
  • Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies; partner with the People team to address employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, and taxes.
  • Oversee benefits administration as related to payroll, including 401(k) contributions, insurance deductions, and leave payouts.
  • Monitor and implement changes in payroll laws and regulations, proactively communicating impacts to Finance and HR leadership.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with People, Finance, and IT teams to ensure seamless data integration, reporting accuracy, and system optimization.
  • Evaluate and implement payroll technology and process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
