Patient Transporter
About The Position
The Patient Transporter moves patients to and from clinical units and diagnostic or treatment areas using a wheelchair, stretcher, or bed. Transport may involve patients using oxygen tanks, intravenous pumps, drips, and other equipment. The role coordinates transport activities within the facility and at entrances, responds to alerts to help prevent or assist with emergencies, and manages the distribution and inventory of clinical equipment. The transporter provides customer service while helping maintain accurate equipment information and inventory levels. This is an onsite, part-time second-shift position at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Cedar Crest. The schedule is 1500–2330, with every-other-weekend and holiday rotation.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to provide a high level of customer service.
- Ability to interact with customers and patients with a compassionate, positive, and upbeat disposition.
- Ability to multitask and take initiative.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association within 180 days.
- Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds.
- Ability to push and pull patients on beds or stretchers, including a stated 29-pound push force, and perform lateral transfers involving up to 50 pounds of the patient's weight.
- Ability to stand and walk frequently to continuously; patient transporters may walk 8–10 miles per shift.
Responsibilities
- Transport patients safely and promptly as directed by medical professionals and established policies and procedures.
- Complete required training, attend in-service education, and participate in scheduled departmental staff meetings related to transportation planning and initiatives.
- Support patient throughput and hospital capacity initiatives by using transport software to facilitate timely transports.
- Coordinate activities in the discharged patient holding area.
- Handle portable oxygen cylinders safely.
- Obtain transport equipment for patient transports.
- Receive and document patient transportation assignments.
- Receive, count, stock, transport, clean, and sanitize medical equipment.
- Take excess oxygen tanks to designated storage areas and ensure tanks are secured in appropriate holders.
- Respond to alerts to help prevent and assist with emergent situations.
