The Patient Service Rep (PSR) in the Emergency Room is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which is crucial for patient care and billing. This role ensures patient safety by preventing duplicate records and positively identifying patients using organizational mandates. The PSR registers patients, collects necessary demographic and insurance information, and handles co-pays and other patient financial responsibilities. Maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA is paramount. The role requires knowledge of insurance basics, Advocate Health contracts, and when to refer patients to Financial Advocates. The PSR must also be knowledgeable about and ensure compliance with various government regulations and acts such as HIPAA, EMTALA, Consent for Treatment, Patient Rights and Responsibilities, Important Message from Medicare (IMM), Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON), Notice of Privacy Practices, Medicare Secondary Payer Questionnaire (MSPQ), and Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN). Additionally, the PSR may schedule appointments, provide detailed information to patients, create a welcoming environment, answer telephones, and assist patients with various needs. They will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues.
