The Patient Financial Counselor engages with patients and their families to confirm insurance benefits and eligibility, determine financial eligibility, and discuss or collect patients’ financial responsibilities. The role serves as a liaison among the facility, insurance companies, and patients to address outstanding balances and pursue timely collections. Responsibilities include self-pay collections for inpatient and outpatient services, working with managed care contracts and government intermediaries, and maintaining current knowledge of regulatory requirements relevant to reimbursement. The position also supports discharge planning to reduce non-payment risks, provides benefit information for the next level of care, and coordinates financial arrangements. It assists patients experiencing financial hardship by obtaining supporting documentation, including bankruptcy discharges, death certificates, hardship applications, and Medicaid documentation, and by using Equifax reports to help demonstrate inability to pay. The role documents benefits and payments in patient accounts, scans signed documents into accounts, follows up on payment plans, and performs additional duties as assigned by management.
