About The Position

The Patient Care Technician works full time on night shifts in the CDH Surgical Care Center (2 B/C), a 49-bed unit caring for post-surgical acute-care patients recovering from orthopedic and general surgeries. The role works under RN supervision to perform basic patient care activities and supports unit workflow in accordance with Northwestern Medicine’s mission, values, policies, and regulatory standards. The posted schedule is 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., including every other weekend, for 36 hours per week (0.9 FTE).

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or enrollment as a nursing school student with one semester of clinical work completed.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Responsibilities

Perform basic nursing care activities delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multitasking, and function under stressful situations.
Use critical-thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change.
Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
Answer telephone calls, intercoms, and call lights politely, use appropriate telephone etiquette, and communicate information to appropriate staff, family, or patients.
Manage overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed.
Perform pre-census work and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed.
