About The Position

The Patient Care Technician (PCT)/Unit Secretary provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or other licensed care team member. This role focuses on delivering excellent patient care while respecting human dignity and the uniqueness of each individual. Unit secretaries are crucial for maintaining efficient hospital unit operations by offering administrative support and ensuring effective communication among staff and patients. Responsibilities include assisting with cardiac monitoring for patients with cardiac monitoring orders and the care and maintenance of cardiac equipment. The PCT/Unit Secretary performs direct patient care tasks within their scope of practice, including assisting patients with personal hygiene, bowel and bladder functions, recording intake and output, collecting and transporting specimens, and assisting with patient activity and repositioning in collaboration with the nurse. They are responsible for communicating pertinent patient information to the nurse and ensuring positive customer interactions by responding promptly and positively to patient and visitor needs.

Requirements

  • Current Kentucky Nurse Aide Certification required or successful completion of first year of a Nursing program and validation of a clinical rotation consistent with level of education.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)

Responsibilities

  • Assisting nursing with cardiac monitoring of patients with cardiac monitoring orders.
  • Care and maintenance of cardiac equipment.
  • Assists patients in personal hygiene activities such as bathing, dental and oral care, hair, and nail care.
  • Assists patients with bowel and bladder functions while maintaining dignity.
  • Records patient intake and output (I & O).
  • Collects, labels, and transports specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Assists patients with activity, turning and repositioning as indicated by provider order and in collaboration with the nurse.
  • Communicates pertinent patient information/findings to patient’s nurse.
  • Ensures positive customer relations interactions.
  • Responds promptly to customer needs, both patient and visitor.
  • Responds to requests for service and assistance in a positive manner.
