About The Position

Assists in providing patient care activities for which employee has been prepared and in conformance with Medical Center policy and procedures, functions under the supervision and guidance of a Registered Nurse. Demonstrates ability to properly perform 12 lead EKG. Responsible for recognizing tracing and bringing it to the attention of the Charge Nurse. Collects blood samples by venipuncture or skin puncture on patients. Cleans equipment and reports maintenance difficulties or faulty equipment. Accurately and timely enters computer information. Assists in providing direct, safe, effective patient care to meet physical, spiritual, and psychological needs of patients ranging in age from neonate to geriatrics. Provides indirect patient care activities as assigned by the individual unit. Observes and reports pertinent information to the RN. Documents thoroughly and accurately describing the progress of the patient. Provides appropriate explanations to patients prior to performing procedures. Communicates in an appropriate manner with patient and family. Utilizes interpersonal techniques which facilitate a productive relationship while working with colleagues and personnel. Continues to increase job knowledge by attending in-service programs. Maintains confidentiality. Performs other duties as required or assigned. Reports on the job as scheduled. Follows all standard safety precautions. Follows the standards of conduct and policies and procedures of St. Mary’s Medical Center and applicable laws and regulations and reports violations through the appropriate chain of command. Annually completes required competency assessments. Utilize appropriate measures to promote and maintain patient safety. Makes decisions which include using the age of the patients treated when appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge of operation to include but not limited to the required unit specific equipment/procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of on-going unit specific performance improvement activities.

Requirements

High School Diploma/GED required.
Successful completion of a multi-skilled technician program which includes EKG, phlebotomy, and direct patient care. Certification must be valid and current.
EKG and Phlebotomy training with patient experience in physician office/clinical setting.
Verbal ability required to communicate with patients and understand instructions received from nursing staff; manual dexterity required to use hands easily and skillfully while aiding patients.
BLS required.
