About The Position

Indiana University Health is seeking current nursing students to join their team and collaborate with medical professionals at the Adult Academic Health Centers, specifically IU Health Methodist Hospital or IU Health University Hospital in Downtown Indianapolis. These hospitals serve the adult patient population. Candidates must have completed a Fundamentals of Nursing course, typically aligning with their first clinical rotation. The Patient Care Intern (PCI) functions as a non-licensed team member under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Their duties include observing the RN, assisting with activities of daily living, providing mobility assistance, performing continuous observation (including suicide prevention), and maintaining a clean and orderly patient environment. Potential start dates are December 2025 and January 2026. Areas that frequently participate in the PCI program include Med Surg, PCU, and ICUs within Adult Neuro, Ortho, Cardiopulmonary, Multispecialty Surgical, Behavioral Health, Medical, Transplant, Oncology, and Emergency Services units.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • Requires 0-3 years of relevant experience.
  • Requires PCIs to be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing education program, with at least one semester of student nursing completed. This program must be accredited by a national organization such as the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Requires that all candidates have completed Nursing Fundamentals in nursing school
  • Requires current Basic Life Support certification through the AHA or attainment at the completion of the IU Health PCA education program. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
  • Requires knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patients served.
  • Requires ability to apply the organization's personnel policies and procedures.
  • Requires up to date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities.
  • Requires proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Requires ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions and variable noise levels.
  • Requires ability to organize tasks and attend to details.
  • Requires knowledge of procedures; equipment; software and standards related to patient care activities that non-licensed role perform (i.e.. PCI, PCA, PCR).
  • Requires ability to perform physically demanding, repetitious movements.
  • Requires knowledge of principles of infection control.
