About The Position
The Patient Care Assistant provides direct support to patients with basic daily activities and helps promote their safety and comfort. The role assists with personal hygiene, mobility, feeding, and physical care, while supporting nursing staff with monitoring and recording vital signs and preparing patient rooms. The position requires diligence, careful observation of changes in patients’ conditions, and receptiveness to coaching. The role is based at Saint Joseph East, a 217-bed community hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Saint Joseph East is part of CHI Saint Joseph Health and CommonSpirit Health.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or SRNA.
- One year of direct patient care experience; the job requirements section also states “1-3 years.”
- Basic Life Support (CPR) certification within 14 days.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct patient care as delegated by RN staff.
- Monitors and records vital signs.
- Assists with personal hygiene and physical care needs.
- Measures, records, and reports intake and output.
- Obtains and records daily weight.
- Performs blood glucose testing using a blood glucose meter.
- Promptly reports changes in a patient’s status to an RN.
- Performs as a patient care companion when needed.
- Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
- Performs unit housekeeping needs.
- Acts as a runner or transporter.
- Assists patients with daily activities, including mobility and feeding.
- Prepares patient rooms.
