About The Position
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides customer service and support to Carle patients, including bedside safety guidance. The PCA may also perform limited duties related to patients’ personal care and hygiene needs, as directed by the RN or healthcare team. Patient sitters serve patients in Inpatient Med/Surg, ICU, CVICU, Neuro, Pediatrics, Oncology, Observation, and Inpatient Rehabilitation.
Requirements
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 days.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene and eating, under the direction of an RN or HCT.
- Safely assist patients between the bed, chair, bathroom or commode, and wheelchair.
- Safely walk patients within their room or unit, but not off the unit, using a gait belt properly.
- Obtain a report from the patient's nurse at the start of the shift; if no report is received, contact the House Officer or Staffing Office.
- Notify the Nurse, HCT, or next available medical personnel of emergent events.
- Inform the Nurse or HCT of changes in a patient's behavior.
- Complete assignments as instructed and directed by the RN and accurately document in the electronic medical record.
- Continuously monitor patients visually to help ensure they do not fall or pull lines or tubes.
- Document the patient's disposition hourly in EPIC.
