Patient Care Assistant - PRN

About The Position
Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) provides customer service and bedside safety guidance to Carle patients. The PCA may also perform limited duties related to patients’ personal care and hygiene. Patient sitters serve patients in inpatient medical/surgical, ICU, CVICU, neuro, pediatrics, oncology, observation, and inpatient rehabilitation settings.
Requirements
- Obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association within 30 days.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene and eating, under the direction of an RN or HCT.
- Safely assist patients between bed, chair, bathroom or commode, and wheelchair; use a gait belt properly.
- Walk and transport patients within their room or unit, but not off the unit.
- Obtain a report from the patient’s nurse at the start of the CPCA shift; if no report is received, contact the House Officer or Staffing Office.
- Notify the Nurse, HCT, or next available medical personnel of an emergent event.
- Notify the Nurse or HCT of changes in a patient’s behavior.
- Complete assignments as directed by the RN and document accurately in the electronic medical record.
- Continuously visually monitor patients to help prevent falls or pulling of lines and tubes.
- Document the patient’s disposition hourly in EPIC.
