Temple University Hospital's Burn Unit Patient Care Assistants (PCA) are expected to learn how to assist licensed nursing staff with dressing changes. The PCA provides direct and indirect patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, implementing components of the plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs. This includes providing comfort, safety, and emergency measures, assisting with activities of daily living such as personal care, nutritional, and elimination needs. PCAs are also responsible for measuring vital signs, performing ECGs, and capillary blood glucose tests. They observe and report the functioning of equipment, results of treatments, condition of dressings, and any changes in patient condition. The role requires incorporating the Hospital's Customer Service Program concepts into all patient care activities, including confidentiality, responsiveness, and caring. The PCA is accountable to the Nurse Manager or designee and must adhere to departmental policies and procedures. If not certified at hire, the employee must successfully complete the onsite nursing certification program within 90 days.
