The Patient Access Representative provides a positive experience to patients and families while registering patients in outpatient and emergency department settings. The representative identifies existing patient records or creates new medical record numbers, gathers and records accurate demographic and insurance information, and scans photo identification and insurance cards. Responsibilities also include verifying coverage and benefits, confirming referrals and authorizations, collecting patient out-of-pocket costs, entering orders and confirming medical necessity for outpatient visits when appropriate, and completing Medicare Secondary Payer questionnaires for Medicare patients. The role may also involve identifying uninsured patients for Medical Assistance or Charity Care evaluation, obtaining workers’ compensation or auto insurance information from accident patients, retrieving orders, and answering phones for outpatient visits. Representatives rotate among Patient Access service areas, including Outpatient Registration and the Emergency Department, and follow departmental protocols, regulatory requirements, and performance measures.
