The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and represents BJC through compassionate, professional, patient-focused service. The role facilitates patients’ entry into BJC facilities and requires emotional intelligence, attention to detail, and the ability to build personal connections. Accurate demographic and insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection support reimbursement and help prevent denials. Correctly selecting the patient from the Master Patient Index (MPI) is critical to patient safety and record integrity. The position performs hospital registration and scheduling across multiple BJC systems. It includes identifying patients, verifying insurance, handling documents, validating orders, communicating procedure-preparation instructions, and explaining and collecting applicable patient payments. The representative must understand and apply regulatory requirements, including Medicare Secondary Payer rules, HIPAA privacy standards, the Patient Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, Advance Directives, Consent to Treat, EMTALA, and JCAHO requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices. The position is located at Barnes Jewish and is scheduled 9:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with rotating weekends and holidays.
