The Passenger Conductor Trainee supports safe and efficient passenger train operations while learning the duties of a conductor. The role combines customer-facing service with physically demanding rail-yard and onboard work. Trainees assist the Conductor with train operations, safety compliance, passenger needs, service disruptions, and oversight of onboard operations. Assignments may be on or off the Northeast Corridor and may involve work in rail yards, near active tracks, on station platforms, and along railroad rights-of-way. Most work is outdoors and can occur in all weather conditions. Trainees work on an extra board without set schedules or shift-swapping capability. Assignments are generally communicated about three hours in advance, and employees must report at least 40 minutes before departure. Shifts can be long and variable, including shifts exceeding 18 hours or spanning multiple days. The position requires availability for nights, weekends, holidays, and extended periods away from home, as well as travel of up to 100%. Candidates must live within a two-hour commute of the Crew Base and complete a seven-to-eight-week training program in Wilmington, Delaware, followed by on-the-job training at their assigned Crew base. This is a union position requiring membership. The hourly rate is $24.38, with opportunities for increases under the applicable collective bargaining agreement after employment begins. Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; wellness programs; a medical plan opt-out credit; a personal health advocate; a 401(k); Railroad Retirement benefits; life insurance; financial advisor sessions; commuter and flexible spending accounts; fertility and family-building benefits; rail pass privileges; and an employee assistance program. Some benefits are subject to the collective bargaining agreement.
