The Passenger Conductor Trainee supports safe and efficient passenger train operations while learning the duties of a conductor. The role combines customer-facing service with physically demanding work and requires close coordination with conductors, crew members, dispatchers, and passengers. Trainees assist with train operations, safety checks, boarding and detraining, service disruptions, and onboard staff oversight. Assignments may be on or outside Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and may include rail-yard and active-track duties such as preparing trains, operating track switches, connecting and disconnecting cars, and working around locomotives and rail equipment. Work is physically demanding and primarily outdoors in varying weather. It involves climbing on and off equipment, moving between rail cars, bending, reaching, walking on uneven surfaces, and lifting or carrying tools and equipment. Employees must remain alert and follow safety instructions in rail yards, on station platforms, and along railroad rights-of-way. New hires must attend a seven- to eight-week training program in Wilmington, Delaware, with full attendance required. Training combines classroom instruction in safety, customer service, and operating procedures with on-the-job training at the assigned Crew base. After training, employees work on an extra board without set schedules or shift swaps. Assignments are typically communicated about three hours in advance, and employees must report at least 40 minutes before departure. Shifts may be long and variable, may exceed 18 hours or span multiple days, and may require nights, weekends, holidays, and extended time away from home. This is a union position requiring membership. The hourly wage is $24.38, with opportunities for increases under the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
