The Passenger Conductor Trainee supports safe and efficient passenger train operations while learning the duties of a conductor. The role combines customer service, safety responsibilities, train and yard operations, and physically demanding work performed as part of a crew. Trainees may be assigned to on-corridor or off-corridor locations. Work may include preparing trains in rail yards, operating track switches, connecting and disconnecting rail cars, and working around locomotives and active tracks. Most work is outdoors and may take place in all types of weather. Trainees must follow operating rules and safety procedures, stay alert around moving equipment, assist passengers, and respond professionally to emergencies and service disruptions. The job requires flexibility for extra-board assignments without set schedules or shift swaps. Shifts may be long and variable, including shifts exceeding 18 hours or spanning multiple days, and employees must be available nights, weekends, holidays, and extended periods away from home. Assignments are typically communicated about three hours in advance, and employees must report at least 40 minutes before departure. New hires must attend a seven- to eight-week training program in Wilmington, Delaware, with full attendance required. Training combines classroom instruction in safety, customer service, and operating procedures with on-the-job training at the assigned Crew base. After training, new conductors are placed on the extra board. This is a union position requiring membership. The position is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and travel requirements may be up to 100%.
