About The Position

The Part-Time Read-to-Win Specialist is a highly visible and responsible position focused on promoting early literacy skills in preschool children. The position involves developing and maintaining positive relationships with educators and administrators in schools and preschools in the community. Duties include delivering age-appropriate, early literacy programs to children in a high-energy, fast-paced environment in the library, preschools, and childcare facilities; keeping accurate records of numbers related to these programs; assisting in selection and ordering of Read to Win books and materials; and working collaboratively with children’s team to plan in-house programs and events. This position is totally funded by grants. In the event adequate funding is not received, this position may be terminated until such time as funds are received.

Requirements

• High school diploma/GED required.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, Microsoft Windows, and Internet navigation.
• Previous experience working with young children in school or library settings.
• Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
• Ability to comprehend and follow instructions.
• Time management skills: set priorities and meet assigned deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to effectively read and understand information in written form, as well as ability to read aloud with expression to children.
• Considerable knowledge of the needs and abilities of children and the available library services.
• Ability to develop and implement plans for activities and programs for children in preschools and the library.
• Sound judgment: ability to make timely decisions in the best interest of children.
• Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, officials of other agencies, and the public.
• Ability to control children, establish their trust, and promote good reading habits.

Responsibilities

• Plan, create, and conduct Read to Win sessions in the schools, preschools, and library, as scheduled by the Youth Services Librarian.
• Communicate enrollment and attendance statistics to the Youth Library Assistant in a timely manner.
• Familiarize oneself with the current curriculum and resource materials to provide engaging educational, literacy-rich programs to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
• Staff the desk in children’s department, as needed: provide patron advisory and support, shelve books, and maintain orderly environment.
• Attend training, as needed. This may include annual conferences, day training, and/or webinars.
• Participate in planning sessions with other Specialists and Supervisor.
