About The Position

This is a part-time position requiring 20 hours per week, focusing on Adult Education ESL instruction and coordination. The role involves direct instruction, classroom management, curriculum development, student registration, assessment administration, and coordination with other staff. The position is located at the David Houston Center.

Requirements

  • Current SC teacher certification or Bachelor’s degree with prior ESL teaching experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Digitally literate, with working knowledge of Office 365, Zoom/Teams, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Requires work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether like or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and evaluate learning experiences, both in-person and virtually when necessary, of adult ESL students through effective planning and adequate preparation
  • Manage ESL classroom to provide an attractive educational environment
  • Ensure proper use of equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Execute school administrative policies and translate such policies to students in a professional manner
  • Prepare, present, and evaluate instructional materials.
  • Maintain accurate records, including attendance, and submit required data and reports in a timely manner
  • Receive and retain certifications as required by the Office of Adult Education
  • Coordinate and conduct new student registration including, but not limited to dates and procedure for morning and evening registration, ensure adequate materials for registration, determine teachers who will assist and roles (BEST Plus, BEST Literacy, TABE, check in/out, etc.), communicate enrollment information with ESL teachers, design and share orientation information with ESL teachers
  • Monitor posttest reports and data for the Spartanburg County Adult Education ESL program
  • Monitor inventory including Instructional materials and submit requisitions when needed
  • Administer required assessments, including BEST Plus and BEST Literacy
  • Attend quarterly ESL instructional team meetings with the Adult Education Director and other ESL program staff
  • Submit required monthly data reports
  • Assist the Adult Education Director with information and data required for grant monitoring and reporting
  • Attend required local, regional, and state level Adult Education trainings
  • Assist in the development and execution of ESL curriculum as needed and ensure alignment with appropriate standards
  • Discuss and review lesson plans with ESL teachers, notify the Adult Education Director with concerns
  • Evaluate policies, procedures, etc. on an annual basis
  • Assist in mentoring/training new Spartanburg County Adult Education ESL instructors
  • Coordinate with evening staff to ensure they are equipped and prepared for the needs of the evening program (i.e. testing, registration schedules, policies/procedures, materials, etc.)
  • Keep informed of new trends and research studies regarding teaching adult English language learners
  • Maintain good working relationships with colleagues
  • Provide a model in dress and mature behavior for students
  • Perform other duties as needed assigned by the Director of Adult Education.
