About The Position

Under general supervision, Parking Enforcement Technicians patrol assigned areas in a motor vehicle or on foot for the purposes of enforcing all types of parking regulations and perform other related duties as assigned. The number of hours worked will be determined by the needs of the department, however, incumbents may work a maximum of 28 hours per week. This is an at-will position and incumbents serve at the pleasure of the City Manager or designee.

Requirements

  • Graduation from High School, or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Class "C" California Operator's License issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles and a good driving record are required.
  • A current Driving Record printout from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) must be submitted along with application. The Driving Record Printout MUST include your driving record for the last 10 years.
  • Ability to read and write standard English at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Interpret, apply and explain laws, regulations, codes and ordinances.
  • Prepare concise, accurate written and oral reports.
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Operate hand-held computerized ticketing devices.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal ranges.
  • Grasping and dexterity to operate hand-held ticketing devices.
  • Operate a personal computer.
  • Drive, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Walk on slippery/uneven surfaces.
  • Crouch, reach, bend and twist.
  • Enter and exit motor vehicle frequently.
  • Ability to work around moving vehicles.
  • Exposure to vehicle traffic, grease/oil, fumes, dust and the elements of working outside.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of parking control experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Issue parking citations to violators of the California Vehicle Code and City of Lakewood Municipal Code and other city policies pertaining to parking, this includes enforcement of violations on disabled parking, street sweeping and 72-hour parking.
  • Respond to resident complaints concerning abandoned vehicles, expired registration, and vehicles parked blocking sidewalks, alleys and driveways.
  • Arrange for towing or impounding of vehicles for 72-hour parking violation and expired registration.
  • Maintain activity logs.
  • Promote pleasant demeanor and effectively communicate with residents and colleagues.
  • Interact with the public in a professional manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
