About The Position

Works under the general direction of the Park Operations Administrator to oversee the overall strategy and direction of arboriculture, horticulture, irrigation, and maintenance and operations in Memphis Parks. Develops maintenance strategies for Memphis Parks greenspaces and Wolf River Greenway in coordination with Park Maintenance Managers. Provides work direction, assignment of duties, evaluation of work performance, and discipline of assigned staff. Establishes and maintains a cooperative working relationship with employees, property owners, union representatives, other department staff, management, vendors, and contractors as necessary. Identifies and implements internal professional development as well as parks maintenance related certification programs. Monitors and prepares budget including goals and performance indications. Updates maintenance and operations standards and preventative maintenance plan in collaboration with Park Operations Administrator on an annual basis. Researches and evaluates new developments in heavy equipment to recommend or deny purchases. Oversees all park operations programs and contracts necessary to acquire equipment and supplies. Prepares bid specifications and contracts necessary to procure and maintain equipment, tools, materials, and supplies. Evaluates and analyzes reports utilizing park operations software and various Microsoft applications to make decisions regarding park operations. Manages park operations fleet to include receiving, identifying, and the storage of city property. Assesses staff and programs to measure their effectiveness. Travels throughout the city to inspect worksites.

Requirements

  • Experience with arboriculture, horticulture, and irrigation.
  • Experience in maintenance and operations of parks or greenspaces.
  • Ability to provide work direction, assign duties, evaluate performance, and discipline staff.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Knowledge of budget monitoring and preparation.
  • Familiarity with updating maintenance and operations standards and preventative maintenance plans.
  • Ability to research and evaluate heavy equipment.
  • Experience overseeing park operations programs and contracts.
  • Skill in preparing bid specifications and contracts.
  • Proficiency in evaluating and analyzing reports using park operations software and Microsoft applications.
  • Experience managing a fleet of vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to assess staff and programs for effectiveness.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the city to inspect worksites.
