About The Position

This is a temporary vacancy covering for a paraprofessional on leave. The position is expected to end when the current paraprofessional returns to work, at which time the covering paraprofessional will be terminated from the position.

Paraprofessionals assist teachers in providing an innovative, high-quality education program designed to meet the needs of children in the Boston Public Schools. They work with school staff to create an educational environment where quality and continuity are key factors in educating students. This position is at Murphy K-8 for the 2026–27 school year and reports to the Principal/Head of School. Compensation is at the BTU Paraprofessional hourly rate; salary information is available on the Career Site.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Forty-eight college credit hours, an associate's degree, or a passing score on either the ParaPro Assessment or the WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants.
• At least two years of experience working with young children.
• Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's or bachelor's degree.
• Certification as a teacher or license as a social worker.
• Fluency in a language valued by BPS, particularly Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.

Responsibilities

• Support direct instruction for children individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings.
• Assist with classroom activities.
• Prepare instructional materials.
• Assist with classroom setup and cleanup.
• Manage individual and classroom behavior using prescribed approaches.
• Supervise students during field trip activities.
• Perform other related duties as requested by the Head of School/Principal.
