About The Position

The Paraprofessional will assist teachers in providing an innovative, high-quality education program that meets the needs of Boston Public Schools students. The role supports an educational environment where quality and continuity are key factors in student education. This is a temporary vacancy covering for a paraprofessional on leave and is expected to end on February 29, 2027, when the current paraprofessional returns; the covering paraprofessional will then be terminated from the position. The role is at Charlestown High in the SPED Autistic Programs for grades 7–12. The position reports to the Principal/Head of School. The position is covered by the BTU Paraprofessional hourly rate; salary details are available on the BPS website by union and grade/step. School start and end times vary, and some schools have an expanded school day under the Schedule A Expanded Learning Time agreement.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Forty-eight credit hours of college coursework, an associate's degree, or a passing score on the ParaPro Assessment or WorkKeys Certificate of Proficiency for Teacher Assistants.
• At least two years of experience working with young children.
• Current authorization to work in the United States by the first day of employment.

Nice To Haves

• Associate's or bachelor's degree.
• Certification as a teacher or license as a social worker.
• Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali.

Responsibilities

• Support direct instruction to children individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings.
• Assist with classroom activities.
• Prepare instructional materials.
• Assist with classroom setup and cleanup.
• Manage individual and classroom behavior using prescribed approaches.
• Supervise students during field trip activities.
• Perform other related duties as requested by the Head of School/Principal.
