About The Position

This is senior level paralegal work in support of the Maryland Criminal Intelligence Network (MCIN) - Overdose and Drug Awareness Coordinator (ODAC) Grant. The incumbent is responsible for performing a variety of specialized tasks related to client needs under the general direction and support of a paralegal supervisor. The incumbent will assist prosecutors and police officers with the MCIN criminal cases. The incumbent may also prepare and review documents, conduct interviews, perform legal and factual research, and other legal related work. A significant aspect of this work involves working effectively and tactfully with people from a variety of backgrounds. Work is performed and evaluated according to established procedures. The Limited Term Grant-Funded position under the MCIN-ODAC Grant supports the Department’s mission by delivering legal and compliance functions in partnership with coalition members. The role strengthens enforcement and community safety initiatives through coordinated efforts to address drug-related crime, gang activity, and other public safety threats. This position works closely with law enforcement, public health, and community organizations to enhance data sharing, improve investigative strategies, and support prevention and intervention programs aimed at reducing drug misuse and associated criminal activity.

Requirements

  • Associate of Arts degree in Paralegal studies.
  • One (1) year of experience in an area related to the judicial/criminal justice system.
  • Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Be willing to work assigned shift work (days/evenings/weekends/holidays).
  • Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.
  • Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties, if applicable.
  • Successfully pass preemployment checks which may include reference checks, background investigations, and drug screenings, where applicable.
  • Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee.
  • The incumbent shall not disseminate confidential information, administrative or operational, unless expressly authorized.
  • Confidential information may not be discussed with other County employees (including individuals in the Police Department), except for work-related reasons, under terms and conditions of the Maryland Public Information Act.

Responsibilities

  • Review arrest warrants with charges meeting the criteria for support of prosecution under the MCIN-ODAC grant.
  • Coordinate felony screening appointments with charging detectives.
  • Screen cases to identify if there are any fatal flaws.
  • Request all relevant discoveries for each case.
  • Generate and submit all pleadings.
  • Train fellow paralegals on how to properly screen, process and prepare applicable cases.
  • Assist detectives.
  • Liaison between the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Investigators and the State’s Attorney’s Office.
  • Coordinate the assignment of firearms and drug-related cases to Assistant State’s Attorneys for review and preparation of search warrant applications.
  • Provide discovery to the defense.
  • Prepare MCIN criminal cases to proceed to trial.
