About The Position

Paraeducators play an essential role in supporting student learning and fostering a positive school environment. At Hoquiam School District, paraeducators help ensure that all students have meaningful relationships, engaged learning opportunities, adaptive pathways, and strong community connections. This position provides instructional, behavioral, and clerical support to students and staff, while reinforcing the district’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and student success.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must meet at least one of the following: Completed two years of study at an institution of higher education. Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree. Passed a formal state or local academic assessment demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instruction (reading, writing, mathematics, and readiness skills).
  • Physically capable of assisting another adult if a student becomes aggressive.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Background check clearance required.
  • Proof of citizenship/work eligibility.
  • Type II driving permit (or willingness to obtain if required).
  • Strong organizational, communication, clerical, and technology skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Regular attendance is essential.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. independently and up to 100 lbs. with adult assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful experience implementing reading intervention curricula such as Read Naturally, Phonics for Reading, and Rewards.
  • Experience working with students in crisis or with challenging behaviors preferred.
  • Training in restraint, crisis management, de-escalation, and playground management preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Math and ELA Intervention support to students.
  • Work collaboratively with Intervention Specialist to provide academic supports to students with high academic (math or reading), behavioral and social/emotional needs.
  • Working with all students including, but not limited to ELL, Title, LAP, SPED, and Hi-Cap.
  • Managing small groups, working one on one with students and providing assistance during direct instruction.
  • Supporting students with high needs, personal care needs and structured recess.
  • Supervise students inside and outside of the classroom including but not limited to lunch, recess, bus lines, before/after school.
  • Provide de-escalation support to students, and modeling of school appropriate behaviors.
  • Build supportive and respectful connections with students, staff, and families.
  • Uphold confidentiality and demonstrate courtesy, tact, and professionalism.
  • Maintain positive and consistent communication with classroom teachers and building administrators.
  • Assist with academic instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics.
  • Implement teacher-directed lessons and provide additional practice and reinforcement for students.
  • Support students with technology use (Google Suite, Google Classroom, Zoom, etc.).
  • Monitor student progress, document performance, and provide feedback to educators.
  • Implement behavior intervention strategies in a calm and consistent manner.
  • Support students with challenging behaviors, following individualized plans.
  • Assist with adaptive physical education programs or therapeutic activities.
  • Help create and maintain an inclusive, orderly, and safe learning environment.
  • Supervise and support students in unstructured settings such as playgrounds and cafeterias.
  • Assist with clerical tasks, preparation of instructional materials, and distribution of equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in professional development and training opportunities.
  • Serve as a collaborative and dependable member of the school community.
