About The Position

Under the general supervision of a certificated administrator and direction of a teacher, this role acts as a communicator between pupil/teacher/parent when manual communication is used. The position assists the teacher in identifying the needs of hearing-impaired pupils in integrated classes, providing tutoring, guidance, or arranging for other resources. Responsibilities include interpreting test responses, reciting and reporting in manual communication, and acting as a paraprofessional assistant. This role is distinguished by the responsibility for interpreting subject matter and educational concepts to hearing-impaired pupils and interpreting their understanding back to the teacher, serving one pupil or a small group in a regular or mixed classroom setting. It requires Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Two years of paid experience working with people who communicate solely by manual communication.
  • Sufficient college coursework to become proficient in manual communications and possess RID or EIPA certification.
  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (48 units from an accredited college or university) OR Obtained an associate's degree or higher OR Meet a rigorous standard of qualify and demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment.
  • Must possess Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification, or equivalent.
  • Must qualify with a score of 4.0 or higher on EIPA.
  • Certificate must be attached to the application.

Responsibilities

  • Provides interpreter services for adults and/or pupils in integrated classes.
  • Interprets written and verbal educational materials to adults and students through sign language.
  • Interprets between adults, pupils, and/or teachers to bridge communication gaps.
  • Performs reverse interpretation (sign to voice) for comprehension by others in various settings.
  • Tutors pupils in academic and elective subjects.
  • Assists teachers in arranging and conducting special activities and classroom activities.
  • Attends in-service and staff meetings, providing interpretation services as needed.
  • Assists with lifting pupils in and out of wheelchairs.
  • Helps maintain a clean, safe, and pleasant classroom and learning environment.
  • Assists teachers in implementing the course of study through individual and group instruction.
  • Supervises classroom and outdoor playground activities to ensure safe practices and relationships.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks, operates duplicating machines, assembles materials, prepares materials, and performs incidental typing.
  • Confers regularly with teachers regarding planning, scheduling, instructional goals, student progress, and health or behavior issues.
  • May participate in developing and implementing individual or site crisis management plans.
  • Assists teachers with implementing pupils' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through various activities.
  • May administer first aid and assist pupils with medication under supervision.
  • Maintains confidentiality of pupil records.
  • Acts as a communicator between adults and teachers, and between pupils and peers.
  • Consults with integrated class teachers to identify and provide help to pupils through tutoring.
  • Acts as a liaison between administration, the Hearing Impaired Program staff, and regular classroom teachers.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
