About The Position

The District of Sparwood is seeking motivated, community-minded individuals to join their team of Paid On-Call Firefighters. This role offers a rewarding opportunity for those with a passion for helping others and a desire to serve their community. Sparwood Fire Services is a dedicated team led by the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief, supported by an Assistant Chief, Training Captain, Captains, Lieutenants, and Firefighters. Paid On-Call Firefighters receive continuous training, professional development, and the necessary tools to respond effectively to emergencies. Members will gain valuable skills, hands-on training, and lifelong friendships while serving and protecting the community.

Requirements

  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Reside within the District of Sparwood.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 non-restricted driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Provide a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check.
  • Be in good physical condition and able to successfully complete a physical agility test.
  • Be capable of performing prolonged, physically demanding work in adverse conditions and inclement weather.
  • Be available to attend required training sessions and maintain an acceptable attendance record for emergency calls.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Interact with the public in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Availability to respond to daytime emergencies.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Possession of a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 driver’s license, and/or air brake endorsement.
  • Completion of fire-related courses, such as NFPA 1001 Level II, NFPA 1002, NFPA 472.
  • Advanced first aid training (e.g., OFA Level 3, EMR, or equivalent).
  • Previous firefighting, emergency services, or Mine Rescue experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in providing fire prevention, protection, suppression, and rescue services, including responding to hazardous and emergency situations.
  • Participate in regular training, drills, and practice sessions to maintain and enhance skills.
  • Ensure the cleaning, servicing, and maintenance of equipment, apparatus, turnout gear, and uniforms.
  • Support and engage in public education programs and community events, promoting fire safety and building community relationships.
