About The Position

The City of Farmington is seeking to hire a Firefighter. This is a regular, full-time position with a rotating shift work schedule. The Firefighter performs essential firefighting and emergency aid activities, including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and equipment, fire suppression, containment, and extinguishment. They also provide basic life support and emergency aid to the ill and injured. The role involves participating in fire drills, attending training, operating communication equipment, inspecting buildings and hydrants for fire prevention, and maintaining fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Additionally, Firefighters assist in developing plans and presenting education programs to the community on safety and fire prevention. They perform salvage operations and may assist with supervisory and administrative activities or coordinate/instruct new personnel after completing their probationary period.

Requirements

  • Successfully pass a Firefighter entrance exam.
  • Successfully pass a Firefighter Combat Challenge course in less than 7 minutes.
  • Successfully pass interview panel(s).
  • Pass an extensive background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical and psychological examination.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Have a valid High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Be 18 years or older at the time of employment.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years.
  • Must be able to obtain a driver's license applicable to Fire Department apparatus.
  • Must pass annual physical assessment arduous level per NWCG guidelines.
  • Be able to read and write the English language.
  • Have a working knowledge of driver safety.
  • Have the ability to complete the Farmington Fire Department recruit academy which will include local customs and jurisdictional practices including firefighter I and firefighter II information and skills.
  • Have the ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergencies, trainings or station activities/trainings for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
  • Have the ability to act effectively during emergencies and stressful situations.
  • Have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Have the ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the general public.
  • Have the ability to obtain New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification within the first year of employment.

  • Preference points will be awarded to candidates based on the highest level of formal education completed (0.5 point for an Associate's Degree, 1 point for a Bachelor's Degree, and 1.5 points for a Master's Degree or higher; based on a 100 point grading scale).
  • Military preference point will be awarded to candidates based on submission of a qualifying DD214 and or proof of current active reserve duty status (1 point, based on a 100 point grading scale).

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose and performing fire suppression, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Performs emergency aid activities for the ill and injured, including basic life support and providing other assistance as required.
  • Works under the general supervision of a Fire Department Officer.
  • Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials and all members of the general public.
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and related subjects.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms.
  • Operates computers, radio and other communication equipment.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  • Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment, apparatus and facilities.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors, cares for grounds around station, washes and dries hose, washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus/ equipment as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Assists in developing plans and education for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, emergency communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, technical rescue, wildland firefighting and emergency aid activities.
  • Presents education programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water and removing debris.
  • Perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings and nights including weekends and holidays.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the City.
  • Attendance at work is an essential function of this position.
  • Upon completion of probationary period, may assist in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
  • Upon completion of probationary period, may assist to coordinate, instruct, or supervise the work of new recruits or other department personnel, as assigned.
