About The Position

Under the supervision of the Manager, Outreach Services, this role is responsible for covering various Outreach Patient Service Centers (PSCs), traveling to patients' homes, and visiting Assisted and Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities. The Phlebotomist performs day-to-day PSC and Home Draw operations, including customer service, training, patient registration, test ordering, venipunctures, specimen processing, specimen tracking, and supply management, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. The position involves independent work, obtaining blood specimens from homebound patients and at LTC/assisted living facilities, participating in an on-call rotation, and completing efficient routes. The Phlebotomist will also provide coverage at PSCs throughout RI and nearby Massachusetts, support daily PSC operations, and perform clerical duties as needed. A key aspect of the role is obtaining blood samples according to venipuncture techniques, monitoring patients for reactions, and properly labeling, documenting, and preparing samples for transport. The Phlebotomist is accountable for coaching and guiding other Phlebotomists and providing feedback to management.

Requirements

High school diploma plus an accredited course through a licensed phlebotomy educational program, hospital, or community college.
Phlebotomy certification required.
Previous phlebotomy experience with demonstrated venipuncture proficiency preferred.
Ability to function independently preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
Knowledge of blood collection equipment, anticoagulants used, special precautions, and interferences.
Ability to implement principles of aseptic techniques.
Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, infection control, specimen processing, medical terminology, anatomic terminology, universal precautions, first aid, and safety.
Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children, and infants.
Visual acuity to distinguish chromatic colors.
Valid driver's license.
Proof of insurance.
Current vehicle registration.
Ability to maintain weekly mileage logs for submission and reimbursement.
Ability to document hours worked for payroll purposes.
Ability to complete efficient routes minimizing patient wait times and delays.
Ability to call patients prior to visits, leave door knockers for missed appointments, and notify Home Draw Administration of any changes.
Ability to process specimens into the laboratory for testing during on-call and varied hours when Processing staff are unavailable.
Ability to work cooperatively with management in implementing new procedures and protocols.
Ability to assist with problem resolution if needed.
Ability to review requisitions to determine services to be performed.
Ability to review and accurately complete LifeChart and non-LifeChart generated lab orders.
Ability to reference pathology handbook/electronic lab guide and obtain additional clarifying information from physician as necessary for test orders.
Ability to perform registrations, enter test orders, medical necessity, Media Manager, specimen processing & tracking functions.
Ability to maintain Outreach Float Resource Binder.
Ability to provide coverage at Outreach patient service centers (PSCs) throughout RI and nearby Massachusetts.
Ability to support day-to-day PSC operations, patient registration, test orders, venipunctures, ensures supplies and necessary equipment are readily available, routinely checks expiration dates.
Ability to assist with daily patient service center checklists, ensures tasks are complete and recorded by end of shift.
Ability to answer phones and perform routine clerical duties as needed.
Ability to Don/Doff PPE as required.
Ability to deliver and maintain on-site laboratory supply inventory at LTC facilities.
Ability to follow Order of Draw and obtain blood samples from patient according to venipuncture technique.
Ability to obtain samples for specialized tests.
Ability to monitor patient for potential reactions including diaphoresis, sleeping, etc.
Ability to label, date, initial, record, and prepare samples appropriately for transport to laboratory for testing and analysis.
Adherence to all system-wide and departmental policies including but not limited to Departmental Call-Out Protocol, Unplanned Absences and Tardiness, Patient Identification and Verification, Patient Look-Up, Venipuncture and Specimen Labeling.
Ability to perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Perform venipunctures and collect blood specimens from patients in various settings, including patient homes, Assisted Living Facilities, Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities, and Outreach Patient Service Centers (PSCs).
Manage day-to-day operations of PSCs and Home Draw services, including customer service, patient registration, test ordering, and specimen processing and tracking.
Ensure efficient routing for homebound patients, minimizing wait times and delays.
Communicate with patients prior to visits, use door knockers for missed appointments, and notify Home Draw Administration of any changes.
Process specimens into the laboratory for testing, especially during on-call hours or when processing staff are unavailable.
Participate in on-call rotations and provide coverage at multiple PSC locations, demonstrating flexibility.
Review requisitions, accurately complete lab orders (LifeChart and non-LifeChart), and consult pathology handbooks or electronic lab guides for clarification.
Obtain additional clarifying information from physicians as necessary for test orders.
Perform registrations, enter test orders, medical necessity, and Media Manager functions.
Maintain the Outreach Float Resource Binder.
Support PSC operations by ensuring supplies and equipment are available, checking expiration dates, and completing daily checklists.
Answer phones and perform routine clerical duties as needed.
Adhere to proper Don/Doff Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) procedures.
Deliver and maintain on-site laboratory supply inventory at LTC facilities.
Obtain blood samples according to the Order of Draw and venipuncture technique, including specialized tests.
Monitor patients for potential reactions during blood collection.
Label, date, initial, record, and prepare samples appropriately for transport to the laboratory.
Adhere to all system-wide and departmental policies, including Call-Out Protocol, Unplanned Absences and Tardiness, Patient Identification and Verification, Patient Look-Up, Venipuncture, and Specimen Labeling.
Coach, guide, and direct Phlebotomists working at assigned locations.
Provide feedback to management on operational questions and concerns.
